Before the ways of the white man came upon these People, some of whom are my Ancestors, they lived in great harmony with the Mother Earth, warmed by the Sun. These were sacred to the People.
When the white man took so much of the land, destroyed so much of the culture and even murdered so many of the People, a dark cloud came and dimmed the Sun. Over the next four centuries they adapted to the white man's ways, but some of the culture was kept alive by stories being handed down from generation to generation by the Old Ones.
I've heard that it was once said by an old man of the People, "The white man claims the land and drives stakes into our Mother Earth. One does not drive stakes into one's Mother."
